The Women of Walkerville present Show me your garden: Private gardens of Medindie

Meet the Women of Walkerville at the corner of Briar and Willyama Avenues to be given the directions to explore three unique and inspiring Medindie gardens. The gardens are planted on the shallow soils of the lime stone escarpment of the River Torrens, which creates demanding gardening conditions. Join us and be inspired to create your own haven. The three gardens are within easy walking distance from each other, and are not normally open to the public.

The first garden, designed over 80 years ago by the acclaimed garden designer, Edna Walling. The garden, now mature, follows the philosophy of informal English-style design with its “artist palette” front garden, curving paths and hidden garden rooms. As the only remaining example of Walling's work in South Australia, the garden is on the State Heritage list. A new stone and cast iron fence allows passers-by to peep through the trees to see this of a well-designed garden being maintained as a gift for future generations to enjoy.

The second garden, 30 years old and at its prime was laid out by South Australian garden historian, Trevor Nottle to compliment the Walling garden next door. Planted with many sun loving roses, the trees have matured and it is cool and shady. A few roses remain and is now a picturesque woodland of shade loving plants. Many of the annuals are self-seeding and most of the perennials are propagated on the property. Learn about gardening in heavy limestone soils, feeding your garden, composting and propagation of suitable plants.

The six years old third garden was designed by Mark Bradbrook and the late David Cheney and was laid out at the same time as construction of the house. It is a contemporary take of a Victorian garden in Italianate style, in keeping with the house design. The garden is parterre in lay out with symmetrical garden beds separated by tightly clipped hedging. Pathways lead to a hidden ornate walk through bird aviary.
