A special dignitary visits the Township

Town of Walkerville had the privilege of hosting the Governor of South Australia yesterday - Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC.

Her Excellency, alongside her husband Rod Bunten, was warmly welcomed to the Civic & Community Centre with performances from the St Andrew’s School choir.

This was followed by a roundtable session with locals and community groups, where she met people who live, work, play, and volunteer in Walkerville.

Mayor Melissa Jones briefed Her Excellency on Council’s community initiatives and exciting projects, and even hosted a pop quiz to test everyone’s knowledge of the Township.

Councillors Anthony Vanstone, Aman Kaur, Liz Trotter and John Zeppel also engaged with the Governor, sharing insights on Council projects and committees.

Her Excellency then joined the Walkerville Knitting Group, where she saw firsthand the impressive work created by volunteers, including pieces knitted for charity.

Her Excellency also experienced the magic of the Walkerville Miniature Christmas Pageant, alongside Reception students from Walkerville Primary School.

Following this, Her Excellency met with Walkerville Bushcare Volunteers for a guided tour of the Myunggidja Adjika Bush Uses Track. She was warmly welcomed to Country by Auntie Elaine Magias, Kaurna Elder, trained Traditional Ecological Knowledge Educator and Warringga Committee member, and enjoyed bush teas and native food tastings prepared by Auntie Leanne, a Buandig/Booandik, First Nations woman and Warringga Committee member, from Cultural Plant Uses.

Students from Walkerville Primary School, who had been actively involved in the project, also joined the tour, sharing their experiences and learning about the importance of caring for the local environment.

At the Walkerville Bowling & Community Club, Her Excellency assisted with the Bowling Club’s raffle draw, before viewing the bowling players out on the green.

To conclude her visit, she stopped at the new Walkerville Bowling & Community Club and The W: Walkerville Recreation Centre. Her Excellency and Mr Bunten even put the new courts and basketball rings to the test with a few shots.

Council thanks everyone in the community for helping make the day so memorable.
