Urban Forest Strategy
Trees are vital to the character, climate and charm of the Town of Walkerville.
Our urban forest not only defines our streetscapes, but also supports biodiversity, improves air quality. and keeps our neighbourhoods cool, green and liveable.
Currently, the tree canopy coverage for the Township is 22.6%. Council is working to increase this by 1% each year, with the ultimate goal of reaching 32% by 2035.
This long-term ambition is guided by Council’s Urban Forest Strategy, which was developed following a comprehensive Township-wide street tree audit. The audit helped us understand the current state of our urban forest and shape practical, measurable targets to help it thrive. Council engaged expert arborists and consultants to ensure that the strategy balances aspiration with action.
The Urban Forest Strategy highlights the challenges that are present in managing the urban forest and has provided a framework to ensure its survival and betterment into the future.
Why this matters?
Trees play a vital role in helping our community adapt to climate change, provide natural shade and foster healthier, more attractive places to live and visit. As our urban areas grow and change, protecting and expanding our tree canopy ensures that future generations continue to enjoy the benefits of a lush and resilient environment.
Council will continue to work closely with arborists, residents and local groups to deliver on this vision for a greener, leafier Walkerville.
