Walkerville Oval

Walkerville Oval

Smith Street, Walkerville

Walkerville Oval is the hub of sporting activity in the Township. It is home to Walkerville Sports Club, which includes Walkerville Cricket Club, Walkerville Football Club, Walkerville Junior Football Club, Walkerville Softball Club and Walkerville Netball Club.

The oval includes a grandstand, free parking and on-leash dog exercise area.

The oval precinct is the centre of a range of sport and community facilities, such as the Walkerville Bowling & Community Club, Walkerville Pre-Kindy, Warwick Street tennis courts and the Alfred Street Playground.

Its sporting history dates back to 19 April 1876, when a notice of a meeting of a proposed Walkerville Football Club appeared in the local press. There is also a record of a Walkerville club playing at Gilberton in 1883.

The present football club was founded in 1901, when players wore red and white guernseys and played in the parklands opposite the Buckingham Arms Hotel. At the beginning of the 1911 season, the club moved to its current Smith Street site, then known as Pocker's Paddock, and recruited many players from the ailing Walkerville Methodist club. Despite its rather exclusive address, the team of 1911 used an old horse tram as changing rooms until more permanent rooms could be built.

The Walkerville Oval precinct is set to receive a large redevelopment. The upgrade will provide a more modern sporting and community hub that services the needs of both current and future generations.

Council was notified of its success for a $4 million grant application as part of the State Government's Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program in March 2021.
