Walkerville Sports Club
Council has now turned its attention to the Walkerville Sports Club, following the completion of several other major projects across the Township.
Following a tender process, Council engaged Studio Nine Architects to prepare concept designs for a new‑build facility at Walkerville Oval. To date, various stakeholders have been engaged regarding the preliminary design scope of the new build. This includes Council’s Sports Club Design Committee comprised of local residents, Council Members and representatives from Walkerville Primary School, the Sports Club and the RSL. In addition, further engagement has occurred with the SANFL, the Presidents of the Football and Junior Football Clubs and the President of the Walkerville RSL.
The indicative timeline for the project is as follows, which has been adjusted following the recent change to the Local Government Elections:
- concept design development by Council will continue through to the end of 2026;
- following caretaker period and the Local Government Elections in April 2027, the new Council will review and then proceed to community consultation on the draft concept designs. The timing for community consultation depends on the newly elected Council, which will also impact timing for the following steps;
- preliminary works and planning approvals are planned to commence from mid-2027;
- demolition and construction are expected to begin from early 2028; and
- Council expects the new facility to be completed and open from early 2029.
The concept design will include similar facilities to the existing Walkerville Sports Club. The design will include four AFL-compliant unisex changerooms and umpire rooms, bar and function room, canteen, improved carparking and accessible facilities.
Council is pleased that it has also managed to secure election commitments of $4 million in grant funding from both the State Labor and State Liberal parties. This funding will match Council’s own funding, bringing the total cost of this project to $8 million.

Town of Walkerville Council is pleased to have secured election funding commitments from both major parties.
On 24 February 2026, the Hon Lucy Hood, Member for Adelaide, announced that a re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will commit $4 million in grant funding to rebuild the ageing Walkerville Sports Club.
On 5 March 2026, Liberal candidate for Adelaide, Julian Amato, announced that an elected Hurn Liberal Government will commit $4 million in grant funding to rebuild the old Walkerville Sports Club.
These commitments match Council's own funding, as set out in its Long Term Financial Plan. The Walkerville Sports Club project is set to be a $8 million redevelopment.
In January 2026, Council officially engaged Studio Nine Architects to prepare a 30% Detailed Concept Design for the Walkerville Sports Club ‘New Build’ option, which would be designed based on a construction budget of $8 million. Over the coming months, Council will be working closely with the architects, clubs and stakeholders to ensure their needs and ideas are reflected in the final concept design.
Once a draft concept design has been prepared by the Committee, extensive community consultation will be undertaken before proceeding with the next steps in this exciting project.
At the Ordinary Meeting of 19 February 2024, Council Members supported the establishment of a Walkerville Sports Club Design Committee to assist in the design direction and scope of the project.
Mayor Melissa Jones and Cr James Williams have been appointed as Council's representatives on the Committee, as well as three representatives from Walkerville Sports Club, one representative from Walkerville Primary School and two community representatives, who were selected through an expression of interest process.
