Fines for late payment

Rates will be overdue if they have not been paid by the ‘last day for payment’ date shown on the front of the notice. After this date, additional fines/interest will apply:

  • a fine of 2% of the amount due will be added immediately; and
  • at the end of each month thereafter, interest (at the rate prescribed in the Local Government Act 1999) will be added on any balance (including interest) not then paid.

Recovery of rates

In any case where the default in payment of rates (including instalments) occurs, Council may without further notice commence proceedings for all amounts due. Recovery proceedings available to Council include:

  • proceedings in any court competent jurisdiction;
  • an order requiring an occupier of a property to pay to Council amounts of rent otherwise payable to the owner of the property;
  • such other legal processes as deemed appropriate by Council; or
  • compulsory sale of property under Section 184 of the Local Government Act 1999.
