The Town of Walkerville is pleased to announce that nearly $9 million in combined Council and State Government funding has been committed to deliver major upgrades to the Walkerville Sports Club and Levi Oval, marking a significant step forward for local sport and recreation.

In partnership with State Member for Adelaide, the Hon Lucy Hood MP, a re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will match Council funding with a $4 million grant, allowing for a complete redevelopment of the existing clubrooms at Walkerville Oval.

The announcement comes alongside further investment in local sporting infrastructure, with Labor Torrens candidate Meagan Spencer announcing a matched $400,000 commitment to upgrade Levi Oval, expanding community access and strengthening grassroots sport participation.

A revitalised Sports Club will help alleviate the growing strain on our local sporting clubs – across football, cricket, softball and netball – which are struggling to keep up with the growing demand for sporting opportunities for female and junior players.

Mayor Melissa Jones said Council welcomed the election commitment, which would help progress the Walkerville Sports Club redevelopment.

“The Walkerville Sports Club has long required an upgrade to meet the needs of our community. With several major projects in the surrounding area now complete, this investment will also bring the Sports Club in line with the high standard of facilities delivered for the Walkerville Bowling & Community Club and The W: Walkerville Recreation Centre,” Mayor Jones said.

“Council recognises that Walkerville is a growing sporting community, and with that growth comes increasing demand for improved facilities, particularly to support the rising number of female and junior participants in sport. A new building will ensure these participants, along with the broader community, have access to a modern facility that supports health, wellbeing and participation.

“The redevelopment of the Walkerville Sports Club represents an important step toward completing Council’s sport and recreation hub in the heart of the Township, further enhancing quality of life for individuals and families in Walkerville and beyond.”

A brand-new, purpose-built Walkerville Sports Club is planned to include clubrooms, four AFL-compliant unisex changerooms and umpire rooms, bar and function room, canteen, modern storage facilities, improved carparking and accessible facilities.

State Member for Adelaide, the Hon Lucy Hood MP, said that upgrading the Walkerville Sports Club aligns with the State Government’s goal to invest in infrastructure that keeps locals of all ages fit, active and connected.

“The Club, which first opened in 1969, is ageing and no longer fit for purpose.  A brand-new Club will be a game-changer for our community, providing modern facilities for the Walkerville football, cricket, softball and netball clubs - including more changerooms to encourage female participation in sport,” Ms Hood said.

“The Malinauskas Labor Government is passionate about getting kids off screens and active. We also know that a more connected community is a stronger, healthier community.”
