Church Terrace
Walkerville
Traversing the suburb of Walkerville, Church Terrace is a vehicular and pedestrian route of defining and distinctive historic character.
From the 1870s onwards, the Walkerville area developed into a closely settled suburban village with community facilities, such as churches, schools, hotels and other facilities.
North Walkerville, as this area became known, like North Gilberton and Medindie, became the address for many families of substantial means.
The area allowed for views and vistas of the Adelaide Hills and was an attractive location for large comfortable houses. Mansions on the scale of “Holmwood” and “Monklands” – which still sit on their early large allotments – were surrounded by more modest houses.
Land was subdivided in 1882, north of Fuller Street, where Walkerville Terrace (known as Barker Street) and Church Terrace were extended through to Lansdowne Terrace. By 1900, about half of this land remained unsold, with most of Brunswick Street still unsold north east of Burlington Street.
Church Terrace today is still admired as one of the most picturesque streets within the Township.
