Welcoming our newest citizens

As part of Refugee Week – on Wednesday, 19 June 2024 – Town of Walkerville Deputy Mayor John Zeppel conferred citizenship upon eight residents.

These new citizens hail from a wide range of countries, including Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Iran, Hong Kong and the UK.

Deputy Mayor John Zeppel said on the day that Refugee Week is an important time to recognise the positive contributions of our refugee residents and our thriving multicultural Township.

“In a world marked by displacement and the search for refuge, this year’s Refugee Week theme – with a focus on family – encapsulates the profound journey of resilience, strength, and unity that defines the refugee experience,” said Deputy Mayor Zeppel.

“Many of you have experienced challenges in your own journey, but you have made it here with the unwavering support of “family” – whether that is the community support systems upon arrival in Australia, the unwavering support of parents, the protection from siblings, the love from children, the friendliness of colleagues, or the kindness of neighbours.”
