Council rolls out annual weed management program

Town of Walkerville is in the process of its annual weed spraying program to assist in handling the current weed conditions in the Township.

This annual program ensures that weeds are contained within the area, ensuring our public places are enhanced and benefitting our residents.

It is common for weed growth to occur, especially after wet periods or seasons.

Council engages a qualified contractor to undertake weed spraying across all four suburbs - Walkerville, Gilberton, Vale Park and Medindie - excluding the River Torrens corridor.

Weed spraying  is usually carried out three times per financial year, typically during:

  • June-July;
  • September-October; and
  • January-February.

However, timing is subject to weather conditions to ensure effectiveness and safety.

The spraying program covers the below areas:

  • road verges, kerb lines and median strips (including DIT roads);
  • roundabouts, footpaths, laneways and tree surrounds;
  • Council-owned car parks, playgrounds and the Wesleyan Cemetery; and
  • service road mounds along Robe Terrace and Park Terrace.

Spraying is conducted using approved herbicides, with care taken in high-traffic areas. All activities comply with environmental and safety regulations, and signage is used to notify the public in prominent locations.

Contractors are required to maintain detailed logs of spraying activities and submit incident reports and end-of-program summaries to Council.

In addition to the scheduled spraying, Council is also undertaking targeted slashing and tidy-up works in areas where weed growth is particularly severe. These follow-ups are limited only to extreme cases, where spraying alone is insufficient due to density or seed dispersal.

If you have any questions regarding our weed spraying program, please contact Council on 8342 7100 or send an email to walkerville@walkerville.sa.gov.au.
