In an exciting announcement, the Town of Walkerville is thrilled to reveal that a groundbreaking redevelopment will be taking place in Walkerville – set to reinvigorate the recreational landscape of the community.

In partnership with Member for Adelaide Lucy Hood MP, Council will be providing a brand new, state-of-the-art, recreational facility at 39 Smith Street.

The revitalised centre promises to be a hub of activity, offering community connection, wellness and enriching recreational experiences.

At last night’s Special Council Meeting, Councillors considered both a refurbishment of the current building and a knock-down-rebuild option. Members unanimously supported a complete redevelopment of the site as it would provide a modern and functional centre that caters to the needs of the growing community.

Mayor Melissa Jones said Council had recently been out to market requesting proposals for both a refurbishment option and a new build option to gauge current market costings.

“With estimated new build costs within Council’s budget, a brand-new build will provide fit-for-purpose facilities today and into the future. A new centre will ensure better value for money and provide the modern facility that the community has been asking for,” said Mayor Jones.

“This redevelopment project will return recreation to the heart of the Township, enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families in Walkerville and beyond. I look forward to creating an inclusive and dynamic space where memories are made and wellbeing thrives.”

Council has a $5 million grant from the State Government and has factored in the budget for the remaining project costings.

Member for Adelaide Lucy Hood MP said, "I am thrilled to be delivering on my election commitment to bring back a community, sport and rec hub to 39 Smith Street.

"Working together with the Town of Walkerville, our local area will once again have access to the community, wellness and recreational facilities they deserve,” Ms Hood said.

Whilst the final design is yet to be determined, it is envisaged the new Walkerville recreational centre will include:

  • a multi-purpose two-court stadium catering for basketball, netball, badminton and volleyball, as well as other activities including dance, gymnastics and community events;
  • an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility;
  • diversified program offerings to cater to all members of the community; and
  • integrated sustainable practices and eco-friendly features.

Stay tuned for further updates and announcements as Council embarks on this redevelopment journey.
